Questions about LJ Voice Post. [UK-Specfic]
I'm not sure if this is the best place to post, but this is the official Livejournal community for the UK, hence I figure that staff will be monitoring the entries as they get posted.

Now, I'm going to throw this out right now: LJ Voice Post is a feature that is mentioned in the comparison chart, and just about everywhere where account types are mentioned.

Sourced from http://www.livejournal.com/site/accounts.bml

And in the UK, we have two numbers. Granted, the US had n+1 numbers in theirs, but bear with me (they dropped to one number for the country).

Our numbers are:

» United Kingdom (London)
020 3105 6053
» United Kingdom (Manchester)
0161 263 0117

Not so OK it seems, because both numbers are flamin' broken! You call them up, smack in your details, start talking, and mid talk, you get cut off. You call again, thinking it was just a glitch. It happens again. That's 10% of your voice post allowance (if you're a Paid Account Holder, or 40% of your allowance if you're a Plus user) down the drain.

I would like the staff to come clean and say why this is. And if we're going to be fed the 'Not our fault, blame our carrier' speech like we get everytime, I would love to know what exactly is being done about it, if anything.

But this isn't all. If you remember, we had a Gizmo client made specifically for Livejournal (Gizmo Project for LJ Talk), that put us in IM contact with all our LJ friends (when they were online, which wasn't often anyway), as well as allowing us to IM with Frank (lj_bot@livejournal.com under Jabber if you're wanting to give it a try.) and post by IMing 'post [SUBJECT] Blah Blah Blah'. That is still intact. But it also let us call that same username to do a voice post for free, over the internets. I figured 'Why not?', and went to download it.

"Gizmo Project for LJ Talk was a voice post and LJ talk client; it is no longer supported or available for download"

Source from FAQ #271.

So now, there is no other way for me to Voice Post, other than to call an international number, and pay international rates. This effectively cuts off an entire country (of which many users pay for this feature), except those with deep enough pockets to pay £X a month to voicepost.

Isn't this wrong? Or even worse, is this a breach of my contract with LJ (I pay, I get services x, y and z)?

Discuss. Or hell, offer me an alternative that doesn't involve me calling with Skype or the full-on Gizmo5, and paying for it.

EDIT: And the irony? Account Expiration Warning.

This is how I made voice posts when I actually could be bothered.

Hasn't it been years with that being a problem?

I certainly remember it being an issue way back when I started on LJ, more or less, although there always seem to have been workarounds - inevitably (or is that resignedly?) LJ is US-centric.

I don't think I've heard a phone post though that has been much more than "Erm... hello, I'm making a phone post... bye!".

No, the UK numbers were introduced within the last 2 years, and I was making voice posts with no problems while I lived in London--I left a year ago today.

It's REALLY annoying, and has been broken for well over a year.

This. I'm still furious about it, bc they say "we're working with the provider to fix this problem"... if it's not fixed by NOW, they should either quit bullshitting us or get a new provider!

I bring it up in most news posts, and marta has responded to me a few times saying it's outside LJ's control. But I'm still annoyed.

It's far from outside of LJ's control. They are paying for a broken service. You'd think that they would have a bit more swing with their provider. I wouldn't mind PAYING an extra $1 a month if it was fixed.

I haven't tried making a voice post in for a while. Has anyone tried international dialing +44? to see if that works?

You could try going via telediscount a useful too for low rate calls with no subscription from any phoneline. Means a bit more dialing tho:)
Allanalbowsmit on January 4th, 2009 05:10 am (UTC)
Just tried the +44 (or 0044 to be more specific) at 5am in the morning (just before I leave for my job. Go figure) for both numbers, and both of them have the BT lady telling me that the number wasn't recognised. So obviously both those numbers don't actually exist in the UK, and are only used to redirect the traffic.

telediscount is a good offer, too. 1p a minute, so for those that don't get free calls at all (unlike me; I could voice post for free in the evenings and weekends), it's a steal. Only problem is that it's a lot of number-dialling.

Seeing as I've got a permanent account I may pester LJ about this. I've paid for life I want ALL the facilities:)

Sounds good to me. Please do.
