I'd certainly contribute, although I already have a permanent account.

I have two permanent accounts paid for up to 2010 but I wouldn't pay another brass penny - especially if it meant dropping free accounts. I mean how much should one pay for vanity publishing?!

How can permanent accounts be paid for up until a certain date? Perms are until LJ dies, or you do.

Sorry. My mistake I have two Paid Accounts. Perm accounts are for the elite. However I have forseen my death in 2010. . . . .

Ah, well don't forget it's not "vanity publishing" for everyone. For me it's mostly a diary with benefits, and I'd pay to keep the service, mostly because of the emotional attachment. The difficulty though is that I'd need to seem a cast iron guarantee of continuity of service, and I have no idea what shape that would need to take for me to be 100% certain!

OK I can see it can be used as a diary with benefits [and as such I have long cursed LJ for not making a clear page by page backup service available or a absolutely dead easy way to download a copy of a journal in one hit.

100% certainty concerning LJ has never been possible. First one became a member by invite from another LJ'er only 'something that won't change'. It did. Then it would always be free. It wasn't. Then 'we will never ever advertise.' Well they do - and more in the last few weeks. PopUps are appearing. I've seen all this before.

Yep, there are certain key features, backup being the main one for me, that have been very obviously lacking from LJ. Perhaps the Russian owners will change that. Perhaps not.
